POLICY MAKERS WORKSHOP FOR MEMBERS OF COUNTY ASSEMBLY FROM LREB 18th – 20th SEPTEMBER 2023 IN MOMBASA-KENYA

KMET in partnership with Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) Secretariat has been implementing a county-led Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development (NCfECD) model dubbed – Smart Start Initiative (SSI)- in six LREB member counties i.e. Nyamira, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Vihiga and Busia.  

To empower policymakers with information on the Science of ECD, to enable them to appreciate the importance of investing in interventions that support Early Childhood Development in their own counties as a foundation for the survival and thriving of children. Training done in collaboration with PATH and led by AgaKhan University Institute for Human Development.

Key highlights from the training included;

  • Need to create platforms to engage the caregivers and the children for holistic uptake of nurturing care interventions
  • Targeted approaches for other caregivers with a focus on adolescents
  • Need for intersectionalities and integration across sectors
  • The investments begin in the early years of the children
  • strengthen Community engagements; capacity building and better messaging towards responsive caregiving and Behaviour change communication.

    KEY ACTION POINTS

    • Policy Makers (MCAs) to prioritize review and domestication of relevant policies to anchor in Nurturing Care for ECD

    • Policy Makers (MCAs) to apportion funds for the Scale-up of Nurturing Care for ECD – across the government sectors.

    • Policy Makers (MCAs) integrate Nurturing Care for ECD messages in all their Community Engagements.

    • Policy Makers (MCAs) to take the lead and support anchoring of Nurturing Care for ECD initiatives in all legal frameworks.

    •Policy Makers (MCAs) are encouraged to be Champions of Change.
